13 Best Supplements for Mold Detox – Boost Natural Healing

Do you think you’ve been exposed to black mold or mold toxins in general?

Are you ready to boost your body’s natural healing abilities after water damage exposure? You’ve come to the right place to learn step by step how to work on naturally healing your body from mold toxicity.

Keep reading to learn more about the best supplements for mold detox, the effects of mold exposure, the best way to determine what type of mold you were exposed to, the health conditions associated with toxic substances, and the most commonly prescribed prescription medications to rid the body of mold.

How Does Mold Make You Sick?

Mold is one of the most harmful substances to human health. Specifically speaking, mycotoxins, the fungi and spopres produced by mold, are what make us sick and can gradually shut down the human body over time.

How does this happen? Mold spores and mycotoxins can:

  • Hinder liver and kidney function, thus clogging our detoxification pathways
  • Embed themselves in the sinus cavities, causing issues like brain fog, fatigue, memory loss, congestion, and a constantly running nose.
  • Travel down to the lungs causes issues like asthma or shortness of breath
  • Hang out in the digestive tract, thus leading to new food allergies, food sensitivities, IBS-like symptoms, bloating, and gastrointestinal pain

If left untreated, the consequence can be a diagnosis of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome or CIRS.  Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome is the term for a progressive, multi-organ system illness that occurs as a result of exposure to biotoxins. The ongoing inflammation causes a large cascade of symptoms and can affect a number of body systems.

Most people do not receive proper care, and as a result, the condition can leave some individuals debilitated. Much of the standard medical advice on this topic is inaccurate.

Infograpic explaining how toxic mold can make you sick to explain why you should consider mold detox supplements.

Why Chronic Mold Exposure Causes Severe Illness and Fatigue

The symptoms and severity of mold exposure can vary greatly. This is why many doctors do not believe or recognize the condition, and it is also why you do not see a ton of hard and fast research.

Perhaps you’ve also heard the term mast cell or Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. This is because a mast cell, or histamine response, often occurs after toxic mold exposure. It typically goes hand in hand with CIRS.

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is a condition that causes mast cells to release an inappropriate amount of histamine and other chemicals in the body. It’s your body’s way of thinking that it is protecting you from biotoxins. Symptoms are typically allergy-like in nature, such as hives, itching, flushing, anaphylaxis, low blood pressure, vomiting, or diarrhea.

The last fact worth noting is that mold exposure can also completely deplete our body’s glutathione production. Glutathione is the mother of all antioxidants, and when its stores in the body are diminished, we no longer have as much fighting power to clear toxins. This is why we often have clients supplement with glutathione to help enhance their natural detoxification capabilities.

What are the Effects of Mold Exposure?

Mold exposure can wreak some pretty serious havoc on the human body. The free radicals that develop from exposure can lead to oxidative stress, immune suppression, and, eventually, immune system overdrive.

Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells. This leads to chronic illness, chronic pain, and aging. 👎

Specifically speaking, CIRS, or Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, can occur from mold illness. Mold illness falls under the umbrella of biotoxin illness.

Dr. Shoemaker says it best:

“CIRS is an acute and chronic, systemic inflammatory response syndrome acquired following exposure to the interior environment of a water-damaged building with resident toxigenic organisms, including, but not limited to fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes and mycobacteria as well as inflammagens such as endotoxins, beta glucans, hemolysins, proteinases, mannans and possibly spirocyclic drimanes; as well as volatile organic compounds.”

– Dr. Richie Shoemaker

Please note that CIRS / mold illness is NOT an allergy. Instead, it is an inflammatory response by our body after our immune system has gone wild from fighting so hard to attack and clear the biotoxin(s).

If you’d like to see the entire list of possible symptoms from mold exposure, we’ve included it in our article about biotoxin illness.

Why Does Mold Often Cause Chronic Fatigue?

Chronic fatigue is the most common symptom of mold exposure, and this is why it occurs:

  • Mycotoxins (the toxins produced by mold) decrease oxygenation in the body
  • The immune system begins to operate in overdrive as it attempts to clear the toxins. Fatigue is typically the first symptom of this reaction, especially if the human body cannot clear the mold.
  • Mycotoxins cause DNA-damaging oxidative stress. This results in mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria is the powerhouse of every cell in the body, thus leading to chronic fatigue.

What Causes Mold and Mycotoxin Exposure?

Mold growth occurs when three things occur after the spores land on a surface:

  1. There is enough moisture in the environment (>55% humidity))
  2. The right nutrients are in place to fuel the growth (most building supplies will do such as wood and drywall)
  3. The temperature is just right (Between ~60-80 degrees)

The easy way to remember this is when there is moisture, food, and a moderate temperature, mold can easily grow and release its mycotoxins.

Mycotoxins are the toxic metabolites released from the mold spores. Mycotoxins are extremely resistant and thus protective of mold. This is why when humans are exposed, we tend to become very ill, as mycotoxins can be difficult to clear.

Clearance can be especially difficult depending on your genetics, gut health, food, and lifestyle choices.

What is the Most Natural Way to Do a Mold Detox?

The most natural way to do a mold detox is as follows:

  1. Remove yourself from the source of exposure and try your best to live in a low-humidity environment.
  2. Be sure you are well hydrated and choose clean food + fresh, colorful produce. Plenty of commonly consumed foods contain mold. If you are a coffee drinker, for example, please check out our mold-free coffee list!
  3. Incorporate a detoxification strategy that you are able to keep up with routinely, such as dry brushing or sauna
  4. Consider a nasal spray that addresses fungal colonization if your symptoms are more sinus-related and or cognitive-related. Even just a basic wash to clear out the sinuses can be helpful.
  5. Begin a professional-grade mold detox supplement protocol (see below).

Above all else, QUALITY supplements taken at the right time, in the correct amounts, will make all the difference in the entire world. My husband and I could not clear our mold exposure until we implemented a specific mold detox supplement routine.

Let’s just say, we suffered a long time, so you don’t have to. Long-term exposure to mold is one of the most hazardous situations you can encounter.

Below, you will find what we used personally to experience relief finally.  After all, it’s not possible to coach you on harmful mycotoxins and the joys of a big fungal infection without a full-blown discussion of supplements. Sadly, an abundance of leafy greens, amino acids, and vitamin C is not enough to clear these types of infections.

The Best Supplements for Mold Detox

And now, for the most important advice in this entire post – the best supplements for mold detox!

Instead of listing a bunch of random supplements like most sites, I will make this as concise as possible. But before I jump in, please make sure you are working with a licensed medical professional who is experienced in mold detoxification. These suggestions are meant to provide a direct path to recovery alongside the right supervision.

After spending over $12,000 on supplements, testing, medical visits, etc., trying to figure out why I felt so poorly, I can now say there are two supplement protocols for mold detoxification that work well.

Option one is a general mold detox protocol that is best for someone who has already changed diet, environment, etc., and is improving but needs a little extra help getting to the finish line.

Option two is for someone who is either a) completely starting from ground zero in this process and or b) they are living in mold and are unable to leave. Examples might include someone who does not have the financial means to test and treat for mold. It might also include a situation where someone just signs a new lease only to find their apartment is covered in mold.

CellCore Mold Detox Supplements: Phase 1 and 2

OPTION #2: CellCore Phase 1 Drainage and our suggested Phase 2 Mycotoxin (Mold) Removal. This is best for those who are brand new to the journey OR those who have been working at clearing mold for a while with minimal to no success. The results we have seen from this approach have been unbelievable!!

Please note that some individuals need to repeat CellCore Drainage Phase 1, the drainage opening phase, before advancing on to the mycotoxin kit. Tolerance is determined by how well the individual can take the full dose of supplements without feeling poorly.

The CellCore Phase 1 Energy & Drainage Kit:

CT Minerals: To help revitalize the cells while providing nourishment as the body is being stripped of mold.

BC-ATP: Helps the body produce more ATP so that you have the energy to get through the day as well as exercise while clearing mold. We need your mitochondria to be strong for you to effectively clear mold.

Biotoxin Binder: Binds to mold and other toxins so the body can more easily excrete.

KL Support: Boosts liver and kidney function so your body can effectively rid itself of mold and additional toxins. Making sure pathways are open for clearance is one of the most critical steps to this entire process.

CellCore Phase 1 Drainage Kit dosage chart to help explain the best supplements for mold detox.

A little fatigue is expected, but if you feel so crummy that you can’t get through the day, you will need to decrease your dose of Phase 1 and advance until fully tolerated. I would recommend at least one week at the full dose before jumping onto the actual mold detoxification kit.

Please also note that if someone is living with a parasitic infection, we must follow phase one with CellCore’s ParaKit before we advance to the mycotoxin (mold) detox kit.

Also worth noting is that some individuals will need to undergo more basic mold detoxification for step two, and others can jump right into the advanced mold kit (below).

Again, work with your functional dietitian to know what is right for you!

Advanced MYC Support Kit: 2nd Phase of the Mold Detox

CellCore Advance MYC Support Kit infographic explaining dosage- One of the best supplements for mold detox

Advanced Tudca: Opens the liver-bile duct system and assists in healthy bile flow, which is essential for detoxification. Basically, declogging the liver in order for mold to fly out the back door!

Carboxy: Extremely potent, high-level binder. Assists in the body’s natural detoxification processes and supports a balanced gut microbiome. A specific formula allows for it to travel throughout the entire body – well beyond the gut, which most binders cannot do.

CT Biotic:  Probiotic with spore-forming and non-spore-forming bacteria combined with Carbon Technology. Provides 11 bacterial strains to essential support detoxification, digestive function, and immune function.

This entire protocol (both kits)  lasts approximately 60 days if well tolerated and if no phases need to be repeated.

An instructional guide on dosing and timing of supplements is provided with the kit purchase. You are also welcome to schedule a strategy call and book an appointment with one of our dietitians experienced in mold exposure.

How to Order CellCore Supplements

Its best to work with a trained healthcare provider when using CellCore products to help guide if changes in supplements are dosage are needed. Best Binder Supplements for Mold Detox Based on Type of Mold

Mycotoxin experts like Neil Nathan will advocate for the idea that certain supplements work best for certain types of mold. This chart provides an excellent example

However, while there may be some truth to this, I have found that more importantly than anything, if detox pathways are opened adequately from the start, AND you begin a high-quality binder, mold will clear regardless.

Option #2 listed above is how we open pathways and then clear mycotoxins.

How to Test to Determine What Type of Mold You Were Exposed to

Advanced mycotoxin testing is the best way to figure out what type(s) of mold you were exposed to. It’s a simple urine test that you can complete in the comfort of your own home.

If you would like to learn more about this process, check out our article on mycotoxin testing.

If you’d prefer to cut to the chase and just order a test for yourself, check out the test we offer HERE for FWDfuel clients. Scroll down to the 4th row and choose the kit that says “Mycotoxins” in order to have a kit shipped directly to your home.

You can then 👉schedule a call with one of our mold-experienced dietitians👈 to review your results and devise a personalized plan together.

What are the Most Common Prescription Medications Used for Detoxing from Mold?

While we believe mold detox supplements are the safest and most effective approach for clearing, there are plenty of clinicians who prefer to write a script for medication.

The most commonly prescribed medication for mold exposure is cholestyramine. In particular, cholestyramine is prescribed most often when someone tests positive for ochratoxin. Cholestyramine is a cholesterol-sequestering agent. In other words, cholestyramine binds to cholesterol, bile salts, and biotoxins in the small intestine and removes them from the body vs. being reabsorbed.

Antifungal medications such as voriconazole, nystatin and fluconazole are second in line. Antifungals can be used to treat mold colonization and the fungal overgrowth that occurs inside the body.

In summary, as mentioned above, the best supplements for mold detox include the FWDfuel Mold Detox Kit and CellCore Phase 1 Drainage opening before the CellCore Mycotoxin kit.

If you’d like a personalized dietitian to help supervise this process and coach you on a mold detox diet, we are here for you! Please do not hesitate to reach out to schedule your complimentary 15-minute strategy call today.
